Textile Industry in India
The range in textile weaves includes pile, knit, jacquard, foam and leno to mention a few. In the scene of fashion designing, a mere weave can change the look of the entire creation. Appliqu works in various weaves can be employed to create a vogue. Lot of government subsidies are offered to these industries. Most textile units are situated in the South of India.
Printing in textile designing is a separate phenomena. Block print industry offers much experiments in colour and design. Orissa ikkat prints are bold and colourful. Though the patterns are typical and repetitive the colours can be adopted for more variety. Tie and die or bandni prints from Gujarat are always trendy. The prints can be utilized in scarves or kurta shirts. Chungdi print from south India is akin to bandhni and very well imbibed into ethnic wear or loose tops. Borders come in patola prints, patti border or temple borders. Peacock and Parrot prints are also typical is certain fabrics.
Tweed is making a come back fashion. Thick and suited for long coats and jackets, tweed in plaids and checquered prints is fashionable.
Dobbie weaves are common for mens trousers. This is a typical weave in geometric patterns. Threads come in variety like acrylic, nylon, silk, rubber and acrylic. The fabric needs to be adopted keeping in mind the Indian climate.
The textile industry as such is a huge sector. Machines pertain to crochet, weaving, cloth finishing, lace making and label making to name a few.
It is sad to understand that less patronage is given to this industry resulting in the closure of many yarn spinning units and other textile functions. Our capabilities and origin are rich in this specialty and it’s up us to guard and give fillip to its growth.
